Pineal Gland Stimulation and Its Ancient Roots
In many esoteric circles across cultures there is a widespread understanding of the presence of an inner “Third Eye”. In the ancient Hindu teachings it is related to the brow or “Ajna Chakra” which is significant in mystical awakening or enlightenment, clairvoyant perception, and higher states of consciousness. Unsurprisingly, this concept is prevalent in ancient Central and East Asian mystical teachings as well. Hinduism and yoga are particularly emphatic about the attributes of this secret, and concealed body part. Researchers, since yore, have made concerted efforts to establish similar links in Theosophy, and New Age spiritual philosophies.
The Deeper Spiritual Link
It must be understood that according to Yoga and Hindu spiritual teachings Lord Shiva is vested with the powers to burn to ashes any thing that came within the scorching gaze of his Third Eye. Of course he is a yogi of the highest order first, and hence he possesses such devastating might. Yet the analogy does not cease here, since we as humans carry the same form that Shiva possesses. In light of this similarity Hindu teachings lean towards, and rather encourage the development of the exact same spiritual powers by all human beings. Arguably we humans have incipient powers to awaken our Third eye and elevate our consciousness; only disuse has rendered it dormant.
ESP and Beyond
The Third Eye is historically associated with the seat of intuition, clairvoyance, extra sensory perception(ESP), and precognition. It is also here that all spiritual awakening is understood to occur. Here, it would be prudent to pause for a peep into the less known, ancient chakra or ethereal constitution of the body. At the ethereal level the human body is supported by a tier of seven chakras, running almost astride the spinal cord. Each chakra encodes within itself attributes corresponding to the entire plethora of psycho-somatic functions of the gross body. At the junction of the two eyebrows is the penultimate, Ajna Chakra or the sixth chakra.
Location Of The Pineal Gland
In the physical dimension the pineal gland is associated with the Third Eye, also related to the sixth chakra. This chakra is known to impart potency to see beyond space-time, aside from many other fascinating psychic powers. The Pineal gland is located near the center of the brain between the two hemispheres, tucked in a groove at their junction. Unlike others it is the only unpaired brain part, as it is not affiliated to either the left or right hemisphere. It is reddish-gray and about the size of a pea measuring approximately 8 mm in humans.
Similarity Between Pineal Gland Stimulation And Eye Tissue
The pineal gland is an interesting anatomical part that has evoked much discussion amongst the New Age community. It is known as the intuition organ, and the hidden interface between body and spirit, but it’s possible that pineal gland is in fact a literal eye. As per Dr. David Klein (Science Daily) “The photoreceptors of the retina strongly resemble the cells of the pineal gland”. Interestingly, the interior of the pineal gland actually has retinal tissue composed of rods and cones (photoreceptors) inside its interior lining just like the eye. There are nerve connections from this area to the visual cortex in the brain, even containing vitreous fluid in it, like an eye does. It seems too much of a coincidence that researchers are unraveling more and more as they delve into the subject. Now it is believed that the retina and the pineal gland are intimately active in functions like recognition and complicated processing of external light. Phototrasduction, the action of sensing light, is possible only through specific proteins in the eye. It is reported that the same proteins are also present in the pineal gland which is indicative of possible photic functions as well.
Western Civilisation On The Third Eye
Amongst the Western researchers, around the sixteenth century, French philosopher René Descartes was probably, one of the pioneers to uncover the mystery surrounding the Third Eye. Although he did not precisely term it as the Third Eye, he postulated that the pineal gland is the seat of the soul and “it is there that the soul directly exercises its functions.” He believed that the soul and body interacted here, and we receive our messages from the Divine at this point. Interestingly scholars have also been alluding to Christian beliefs in the Third Eye. At least it finds some mention in Matthew 6-22: “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” It seems plausible that the idea of there being a spiritual eye prevailed across cultures.
Modern Research And Reportings on Pineal Gland Stimulation
In more recent history the primacy of the pineal gland resurfaced again during research on DMT (dimethyltryptamine) in the 1990s. This is essentially a psychedelic compound, which is significant in its presence in humans during deep meditation, also during hallucination, clairvoyance, ESP events, psychosis, and even dreaming.
DMT And The Third Eye
Dr. Rick Strassman (University of New Mexico), is a researcher on DMT and author of the book DMT: The Spirit Molecule. He has postulated that DMT is released during REM sleep in the pineal gland, leading to dreams. Moreover, just prior to death, and near death, the release of DMT is possibly the cause of NDE (near-death experiences). How does Dr. Rick Strassman arrive at this postulate? Because the pineal gland is known for the biosynthesis of melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns, biorythms and photoperiodic (seasonal) functions. Certain enzymes in the brain have the potential to synthesise DMT from tryptamine neurotransmitters and hormones like melatonin. However due to the body’s rapid catabolism (breakdown) of DMT, its presence in the human pineal gland has yet to be confirmed or denied. Yet significant connections still cannot be wished away; for instance Wikipedia mentions that in 2013, researchers have reported DMT in the pineal gland microdialysate of rodents.
It becomes intriguing when we consider the Buddhist belief that the soul is reincarnated in a new body within forty-nine days. Connect the dots here when Dr Strassman says in his book, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, that pineal gland is visible in the developing foetus at forty-nine days after conception. Thereafter, it is a clinical fact that the pineal gland is actively involved in regulation of crucial biorythemic functions from birth till death. Owing to its overarching importance in the evolution of consciousness over a human lifetime, it merits utmost attention and care.
Fluoride Impact On the Pineal Gland
Without digressing from the scope of this article it is essential to point out the increasing concern caused by latest research over calcification, and fluoride accumulation in the pineal gland. In the 1990s British scientist, Jennifer Luke, discovered that fluoride accumulates to strikingly high levels in the pineal gland. Based on his studies the National Research Council concluded that fluoride has the property of decreasing melanin production in the pineal gland, thereby effecting normal physiological functions.
The Third Eye (related to the Sixth Chakra) is a well known attribute of the ethereal body. It carries numerous psychic powers of higher consciousness, including clairvoyance, and ESP. Recent research is increasingly converging on the possible link between the Third Eye and the pineal gland stimulation, which is a unique part of the brain, in that it is not directly linked with either hemisphere. Seminal work by researchers like Dr Rick Strassman has shed light on melanin production, and possibly DMT in the pineal gland. Subsequent studies have now brought conclusive evidence to the fore regarding the adverse effects of fluoride on the pineal gland. In the interest of development of human consciousness it is imperative to nourish the pineal gland and prevent inorganic contaminants from irreversibly damaging this critical brain part.
